Alston, Robert "Bob" Cotten II - Ansley Park Civic Association (1 of 2), 1968-1972
Scope and Contents
This series is composed of correspondence and legal documents pertaining to several generations of the Alston family. Correspondence features discussions regarding finances, land plot purchases, education, historical society applications, and legal documents such as wills and estate planning. Of particular interest is correspondence between Philip Henry Alston Sr. and Edward Frederick Lindley Wood, 1st Earl of Halifax, from his visit to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1941. There is also correspondence from Robert “Bob” Cotten Alston II to the Ansley Civic Park Association and members of the community about the removal and restriction of African Americans, “hippies," LGBTQ+ identifying persons, and groups cohabitating in single family homes. Also included are original documents and genealogical research conducted after 1920. There are also plantation drawings and receipts of sale, land grants from Governor Wilson Lumpkin, and land indentures from King Charles II and King George II to Alston settlers in South Carolina. Of particular interest is a receipt for the purchase of an enslaved person dated 1827 to William Ott.
