Chamber of Commerce meeting minutes, 1933
Scope and Content
This series contains meeting minutes created by the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. The bulk of these minutes originate from the chamber as a whole, with others coming from specific chamber councils. All of the minutes from 1919 to 2012 have been un-bound. The books of minutes not only include notes from the meetings, but also clippings, pamphlets, and booklets related to topics discussed by the chamber pasted onto, or inserted in between, book pages. The meeting minutes from 1914 to 1916 are not a part of this collection. Meeting minutes discuss pivotal social, economic, and political events on the local, state and national level. Examples include the Cotton States Exposition of 1895; the Atlanta race riots of 1906; the Chamber led Forward Atlanta campaigns of 1925 and 1972; the Great Depression and New Deal efforts; both World Wars, the gradual repeal of Jim Crow laws and segregation; the creation and later expansion of local airports (particularly the Hartsfield-Jackson International airport, which was founded as Candler Field in 1925 and greatly expanded in 9161, 1977, 1980, and 2003); the establishment of the Metroplitan Area Rapid Transit Administration (MARTA) in 1971; hosting the Summer Olympics in 1996; and the establishment of the Atlanta Belt-Line in 2005.
