Scope and Content
This series contains the mayoral records of Atlanta’s 53rd mayor, Sam Massell. The series was kept in the City of Atlanta’s original order. Series include: correspondence, memos, newspaper clippings, speeches, proclamations, meeting minutes, budget plans, and press releases. The series also houses records of city government committees, commissions, and departments. The records feature correspondence between Massell and his constituents. The remaining correspondence are predominantly from and to his vice mayor Maynard Jackson, his administrative assistant Dan Sweat, the Atlanta Board of Aldermen and his executive secretary, Norma Day. Newspaper clippings included in these records demonstrate the tumultuous political climate during his term which was highlighted by racial tension, tax increases, lack of housing, police brutality, drug trafficking, and transportation problems. The material also includes records of the City of Atlanta departments including those of sanitation, police, water, transportation, airport, land, fire, parks, purchasing, personnel, public works, planning, finance, and building are included as well as those of the Housing Authority Department. Other materials include records of the Metro Planning Commission; Transportation Policy Committee; Crime and Juvenile Delinquency Committee; Zoning Committee; Family Planning Committee; Community Relations Commission; Ordinance and Legislation Committee; and Prison Committee along with several others.
