Scope and Contents note
The subjects files, comprised of announcements, brochures, business records, clippings, correspondence, financial documents, legal documents, notes, and reports, detail the establishment and operations of and changes to the Hambidge Center and the New York-based retail store, Rabun Studios. The lives and activities of women and men associated with both institutions also are recorded, including artists such as Vassos Kanellos, Maxfield Parrish and Georgia O’Keefe; Eleanor Steele Reece, benefactor of the Hambidge Center; board members; shop and grounds managers, notably Violet Winterfield, and weavers. This series also details the institution’s programming and projects, including textile designs created for President Harry S. Truman’s yacht, the U. S. S. Williamsburg; the 1958 exhibit, “Weavers of Rabun,” which appeared at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.; and fabrics used in a 1963 line of clothing for internationally known fashion designer Laura Willis.
