Scope and Contents note
This series is comprised of photographs that document politics, sports, civic gatherings, civil rights, natural disasters, agriculture, and holidays in Atlanta, the State of Georgia, New York, and Alabama. The subjects are arranged alphabetically by the name of the event. Documentation of political events include images of local elections in Atlanta, and images of George Wallace during the 1966 gubernatorial campaign of his wife, Lurleen Wallace. Images of sporting events include Atlanta Braves baseball games, Atlanta Falcons, University of Georgia, and Georgia Tech football games, the Masters Golf Tournament, hunting, fishing, stock car racing, tennis matches, and track and field meets. Civic and community gatherings include awards ceremonies for soldiers during the Vietnam War, Christmas shopping, court proceedings, League of Women Voters meetings, parades, zoning plan meetings, opera premieres, religious revivals, and the funeral of Senator Richard B. Russell. Images that document the civil rights movement include a rent demonstration in Atlanta involving Martin Luther King, Jr., and Ralph David Abernathy, the integration of Murphy High School in Atlanta, and hundreds of photographs in Atlanta and throughout the state of Georgia of the General Assembly Committee on Schools, commonly known as the Sibley Commission. This series also includes images of tornado damage in Gainesville, Ga., in 1936. Photographs of agricultural activities in the state of Georgia include images of cane grinding, and cotton production. The series documents the celebration of Valentines Day and Thanksgiving in Atlanta.
