Scope and Content

This collection consists of a list of casualties suffered by the 23rd Alabama Volunteer Infantry between May 7, 1864, and September 10, 1864, while engaged in combat at several locations in Georgia including Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, New Hope Church, Marietta, Kennesaw Mountain, and Jonesboro. The list contains the names of the men who were injured or killed and their rank and company. There is a "remarks" column where the company surgeon, J. M. Hunt, listed the place where the casualty occurred and described the injuries. He also noted whether the soldiers were recuperating, returned to duty, or died of their wounds. The final page contains a list of those killed, their rank, company, date and place killed, and a "remarks" column. Also included is a numerical recapitulation of all casualties suffered by the unit during the specified time period.

Administrative/Biographical History

The Alabama 23rd Volunteer Infantry was organized at Montgomery, Alabama, in November, 1861. Men of this unit were drawn from the counties of Wilcox, Macon, Monroe, Clarke, Conecuh, Marengo, Lowndes, Baldwin, and Choctaw, Alabama. It fought several battles in Mississippi, including Chickasaw Bayou, Port Gibson, Champion's Hill, Big Black River Bridge, and Vicksburg, where the unit was captured. Exchanged and reorganized, it was assigned to General Pettus' Brigade, Army of Tennessee, and participated in various conflicts from Chattanooga, Tennessee, to Atlanta, Georgia, mustering out in North Carolina. The field officers were Colonel Franklin K. Beck and Colonel Joseph B. Bibb and Major James J. Hester, Major John J. Longmire, Major Francis McMurray, and Major Felix Tait. Additional historical information about the 23rd Alabama Volunteer Infantry has not been determined.
