Administrative/Biographical History

The parent institution of Lee Street School was West End Academy, founded in 1884. The City of West End dissolved on January 1, 1894, when it was incorporated into the City of Atlanta. The schools to occupy the site of the former academy include the West End School on Lee Street (1894-1903), and the Lee Street School (1903-1969). The school served the primary grades. Beginning in 1914, the Atlanta Normal Training School was offered at the site and included a two year course for the preparation of teaching as a profession. This training continued until 1924. The Lee Street School pioneered, in Atlanta, the open-air concept of education as an anti-tubercular measure. The practice waned in popularity and was discontinued in the 1920s. When Lee Street School closed in 1969, the students of the area continued study at the Dean Rusk School.
