Administrative/Biographical History
The Haaga Seed Farm of Memphis, Tennessee, was owned and operated by Oscar John Haaga (1890-1934). Haaga was born in Memphis to German immigrant parents, Joseph Haaga (1851-1892) and Caroline Rigger (1857-1932), and attended the Christian Brothers College (later Christian Brothers University) in Memphis. Haaga married Agnes Marie Gallagher (1888-1981) and together they had nine children. The Haaga Seed Farm began breeding, growing, and distributing cotton seed in the early 1910s, and by the 1930s, the farm had grown in size to over 300 hundred acres. The farm produced cotton seed for clients in the Southern states and included experimental cotton crops that were tested and grown for future sale. Haaga tested and promoted several types of long staple big boll cotton seed including Webber and Columbia. He also created new machinery to pick and process cotton as well as spread boll weevil poison on cotton crops. Haaga also operated the Haaga Cotton Company, a cotton buying business in West Memphis, Arkansas.
