Administrative/Biographical History
The Men's Garden Club of Atlanta, Georgia, was organized in 1938 to "inspire, promote, and develop an interest in gardens and gardening, to bring the members together through a common bond; to create a forum for its members, where they may discuss gardening and all of its attendant problems; and to encourage the planting and the protection of beautifying plants, shrubs, and trees." Among the club's earliest notable members were botany professor Dr. W. B. Baker; landscape architect Norman Butts; dahlia expert Conrad Faust; horticulturist and nurseryman Donald Hastings; and garden writer Charles Hudson. The club is a member of the Men's Garden Clubs of America and The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. and helped sponsor the formation of other local men's garden clubs. The club is governed by elected officers such as president, vice president, and treasurer. One of the club's earliest projects was to support the creation of a state botanical garden in western Fulton County. The club also participated in city beautification efforts, sponsored the building of a park at Brasstown Bald in the north Georgia mountains, and supported legislation to control billboards on federal highways. In addition the club actively competes in flower shows, winning many awards.
