Administrative/Biographical History

The Western & Atlantic Railroad (W & ARR) of the state of Georgia was created by an act of the Georgia General Assembly on December 21, 1836. The W & ARR was the connecting link in a system of lines that made Georgia the keystone state of the South. The rail line was used extensively in the Civil War. On December 12, 1870, state operation of the line ceased and it was leased to the Western and Atlantic Railroad Company. This lease lasted until 1890 when the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railway obtained lease of the railroad.
