Artimesia W. Tucker testimony
Scope and Content
This collection contains an Ante bellum document requesting Clifford Anderson and Elcania W. Tucker to transcribe and notarize the testimony of Artimesia W. Tucker in the legal case of Green J. Blake against the Southern Mutual Insurance Company. The collection also contains the handwritten transcription of her testimony dated June 5, 1855. The case was scheduled to appear before Judge James Jackson of the Superior Court of Clarke County, Georgia in June of 1855. Due to demonstrated inconvenience, Artimesia W. Tucker was unable to appear before the court in person and instead provided her written testimony. She testified that Rial, the slave living on her property, had been sick with what she believed to be consumption from October 1848 until his death several years later. She asserted that he never fully recovered from the cough he contracted in October 1848, and that this ailment often prevented him from working. In this written testimony she also states that Green J. Blake, Rial’s owner, was aware of his illness and that Blake asked her not to reveal the nature or length of his sickness to the Southern Mutual Insurance Company. This company insured Rial for Green J. Blake.
