Administrative/Biographical History

The Expressway Beautification Association was formed in 1952 by co-chairs Jean H. Neely and Peggy F. Hughes, past-presidents of the Lenox Park Garden Club, to improve landscaping of the new North-South Expressway, now referred to as the I-75/85 or Downtown Connector, from downtown Atlanta to the Brookwood Station. The association consisted of over one hundred Atlanta garden clubs that worked with both federal and state highway departments, along with Atlanta landscape architect Eugene R. Martini as well as nurseryman Frank A. Smith, who provided designs and supervised the landscaping. Over 10,000 trees, shrubs, and vines were planted over a four year period. The association participated in this beautification project until its completion in 1956.
