Scope and Content

This collection consists of an account of the sale of "perishable property" and "land and negroes" of James Carter. The sale took place on the first of January, 1859, and was filed with the Sumter County court on 18 June 1859. Included in the sale were Carter's personal effects including furniture, blacksmith tools, farm equipment, and household goods. The account also includes 303 3/4 acres of land, four male slaves: "Green," "Solomon," "Frank," and "Titus," and a female slave and her child, "Winney and Joe."

Administrative/Biographical History

James Carter (1773-1858) was the son of Kindred Carter (approximately 1750-1800). He married Eleanor "Nellie" Duckworth in 1798 in Columbia County, Georgia, and the couple moved to Warren County, Georgia, in approximately 1815. James was a cotton planter. He and Nellie were the parents of nine children: Wiley (1798-1864); Epsey (1803-1867); Kezia (1805-1855); Littleberry (1807-1847); Felix M. (?-1844); Marina (1809-?); Martha; George W.; and James D. (?-1854). Carter died at the home of his son, Wiley, in Schley County, Georgia. Wiley Carter married Ann Ansley in 1821 in Warren County, Georgia. The couple had eleven children: Armanda; Caroline (1823-1854); Calvin G. (1825-1899); Euphrasia A. (1829-?); Littleberry Walker (1832-1874); Jane (1834-1905); Julia (1836-?) Louisiana Virginia (1838-?); Wiley Jr. (1841-1904); Ann W. (1843-?); and Jesse Taliaferro (1846-1924). Wiley moved to Schley County, Georgia, in 1851 and was a cotton planter. He served as the administrator of his father James' estate, the contents of which were sold in January 1859. Wiley Carter's great-great-grandson is James Earl "Jimmy" Carter, Jr. (1924- ), the thirty-ninth President of the United States of America (1977-1981).
