Administrative/Biographical History
Mary Butt Griffith Dobbs (1890-1970) was born to Mary Burke (Butt) Griffith (1857-1928) and Benjamin Howard Griffith (1853-1902) in Beverly, Georgia. She married John Henry Dobbs (1891-1925) in 1922. They had one daughter, Beverly Dobbs (1928-?). The Griffith family was very involved in music; Mary performed in concerts and musicals nationally. In 1921 her, Mary Burke Griffith, started the Griffith School of Music. The National Bureau for the Advancement of Music recognized the school, and the school started a teaching system that the Fulton County School System adopted. Mary Dobbs, her sister L’Ella Griffith Bedard (1883-1971), and brother William Butt Griffith (1880-1964) worked at the school and kept it operational after their mother passed away in 1928. The Griffith School of Music closed in 1966. In 1997, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
