Scope and Content

This collection contains material collected by and about Tom Watson Brown. There are reviews and critiques of the television documentary The Murder of Mary Phagan that aired on NBC in 1988; speeches given by Brown at the Confederate Memorial Day service in Stone Mountain, Georgia in 1978, and about the Leo Frank trial, given in 1982; and an assortment of tickets from sporting and entertainment events primarily from the Atlanta area.

Administrative/Biographical History

Tom Watson Brown (1933-2007) was born in Washington, District of Columbia to Walter Johnson Brown (1903-1995) and Georgia Louise Watson (1906-1935). He was the great-grandson of national populist leader Tom Watson. Brown worked as a lawyer in Atlanta; however, his fortune was earned primarily through Spartan Communications, a chain of broadcast stations in medium-sized markets, which Brown inherited from his father. Brown was active in the politics and culture of Atlanta. He served on the boards of the Atlanta Historical Society, the Georgia Historical Society, the Georgia Civil War Commission, the Atlanta Legal Aid Society and the Georgia Legal History Foundation, among other positions.
