Administrative/Biographical History

Vicki Vara (1954-) and her brother, Henry Vara, opened Backstreet Atlanta in 1975, an all hours gay dance club on Peachtree Street that became a nightlife landmark in the city. The siblings also owned the Armory, a gay bar in an adjacent building that became nationally known for its drag troupe, the Armorettes. Backstreet and the Armory closed in 2003. Additional historic info has not been determined.
