Scope and Content

This collection contains correspondence, a business card, handwritten notes, school work, and church materials. Correspondence involves letters and newspaper clippings exchanged between family members. Many of the letters are to John Augustus Wayt while attending school and in the military (1914-1920). The business card belonged to John Chiles for his building materials business. School work includes John Augustus' class notes in chemistry and engineering; notes and lists include printed materials supporting programs offered by the Young Men's Christian Association (Y.M.C.A.) and speeches. There is also a booklet on lesson planning for Presbyterian church Sunday schools.

Administrative/Biographical History

John Chiles Wayt (1864-1940) and Harriet Reynolds Dunnington Wayt (1865-1924) had four children: Beverly Dunnington (1896-1995); John Augustus (1897-1980); Isabelle Dunnington (Wayt) McBath (1902-1996); and Helen Brice (Wayt) Cocks (1899-1989). John Chiles was in the real estate and loan business. John Augustus was a student at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville (1914-1918) and attended the Georgia Institute of Technology (1918-1920). In 1918, John Augustus was stationed at Fort Screven in Tybee Island, Georgia. John Augustus married Josephine Kline Gibbs (1898-1971) and ran the Seven Branches cattle ranch in Roswell, Georgia, which was later home to the Georgia Steeplechase. Additional biographical information about the Wayt family has not been determined.
