Rupert Davol papers
Scope and Content
This collection contains materials related to the World War II military service of Rupert Raydon Davol. The bulk of the collection is comprised of letters written by Davol to his family during wartime, updating them on his condition and well-being. The collection also includes newspaper clippings reporting Davol's wartime injuries, the awarding of the Bronze Star Medal upon return home, and his death. Davol's military registration card is also included.

Administrative/Biographical History
Rupert Raydon Davol (1919-1973) was born in Alabama to parents Rupert D. Davol (1878-1949) and Ruby Withurst Davol (1897-1988). Rupert had one brother, Charles Mack Davol (1921–1996), and three sisters. The family moved to Atlanta in 1935. In 1940 Rupert R. Davol enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served as a platoon sergeant in the 517th Parachute Infantry attached to the 82nd Airborne Division. Davol was wounded and discharged from the military in 1945. Upon his return home, Davol played football for the University of Georgia. Hindered by an injury, Davol left school and began work at Lockheed Aircraft Co.
