This collection consists of letters between John Vile and his wife Frances. Most of the letters were written by Frances and contain information about life on the homefront in Massachussets during the Civil War.

Administrative/Biographical History

John Viles (1819-1882) was born in Waltham, Massachusetts, to John (1773-1851) and Relief Viles (1787-1876). He married Maria Hale (1825-1851) and they had three children: John Edward (1844-1872), Frances Maria (1846-1847), and Frederick Eugene (1849-1931). In 1852 Viles married Frances Thornton (1829-1884) and had two children: Frank Thornton (1856-1931) and Lilla Bella Wyman (1859-1944). Viles served as a corporal and was the music arranger for the 13th Massachusetts Volunteers band. His company fought in the Second Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Antietam, and the Battle of Fredericksburg.
