Administrative/Biographical History

Joshua Gilbert (1815-1889) was born in Clemson, South Carolina. He studied medicine at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, and moved to Terminus (later called Atlanta) to practice medicine. In 1840 he married his first wife, Elizabeth Humphreys Gilbert (1823-1847). Together they had two children: Camilla A. Gilbert (1842-1910) and Ansell L. Gilbert (1846-1906). In 1860 he married his second wife, Martha Louise Gilbert (1831-1915). Joshua Gilbert was purportedly the first doctor to practice medicine in Atlanta.
