Administrative/Biographical History

The Atlanta Astronomical Society (A.A.S.) was founded on October 30, 1926 with the purpose "to make an earnest endeavor to seek, collect and disseminate more light from our neighbors in the sky." The A.A.S. was a non-profit club, with no receipt of donations or fundraising, that was open to all those interested in the study of the stars regardless of their knowledge or education. The society was headed by a council comprised of a president, vice president, and secretary. In 1926 the President was Mr. S. Lynn Rhorer; the Vice President Dr. J. Fred Messick; and the Secretary Mr. Truitt Harper. After Harper, Fred. L. Williams, Jr. became the Secretary and donor. Society meetings consisted of various topics of discussion, all pertaining to astronomical current events and local happenings. The A.A.S. met monthly, in several different locations around Atlanta, such as observatories, tea rooms at universities, and parks.
