Scope and Content
This collection consists of letters written by Carl Mills and sent to James Darsey. The letters track the trajectory of their relationship, beginning with their courtship and ending with their ambiguous reconciliation years later. Mills primarily wrote about his travels across California and his love for Darsey, but he also commented on how political hostility affected romantic relationships within gay and lesbian couples.

Administrative/Biographical History
James Darsey (1953-) was born in Sarasota, Florida, and moved to Atlanta, Georgia, when he was in high school. He graduated from Florida State, and then lived in the Midwest for the next twenty-four years. He received his PhD from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1985, and returned to Atlanta to work as a professor of Communication at Georgia State University. In 1999 he wrote The Prophetic Tradition and Radical Rhetoric in America ; a year later he won a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship. Additional biographical information about James Darsey has not been determined.
