Scope and Content

This collection consists of materials about MacRae's teaching career, including correspondence, manuscripts, speech transcripts, and news clippings. Of particular interest is MacRae’s critical writing against “career education,” the movement in the 1970s in the United States Department of Education away from a general education and toward training grade school and high school students for a career and vocation.

Administrative/Biographical History

Douglas MacRae (1907-1986) was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and graduated from Boys High School in 1924. He attended Emory University and received his Bachelor of Arts in 1928 and his Master of Arts in 1940. In 1957 received his Doctor of Laws Degree from Pesbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina. He married Ida Shepard (1907-1963) and they had a daughter named Martha. In 1964 he married his second wife, Annis MacRae. Douglas worked in the Fulton County School System for 45 years, serving as principal of College Street Elementary School in Hapeville, Georgia from 1936-1938; principal of Hapeville High School from 1938-1941; principal of Fulton County High School from 1941-1944; and principal of North Fulton High School from 1944-1947. Additionally, he served as the Assistant Superintendent of the Fulton County School System from 1950 to 1967 and was the ruling elder of the Atlanta Central Presbyterian Church from 1938 until shortly before his death.
