Scope and Content

This collection consists of an audio recording containing an interview between Trammell and his friend, Van Hall, as well as the interview transcript. In the interview, Trammell recounts his personal experiences as a gay man in Atlanta during the 1950s and 60s. Trammell talks substantially about his life as a closeted gay man and the measures that he and his partner, Bill Camp, took to conceal their sexual orientation. Trammell also discusses his aversion to gay activism, saying that he preferred to live a more circumspect life. In the interview, Trammell reveals his disdain for people he considers to be of a lower class and their perceived lack of understanding of homosexuality. He also reflects on the concept of sexual "cruising" amongst gay men in Atlanta, the AIDS epidemic, which claimed the lives of several of his friends, and his church, St. Luke's Episcopal Church, for which he had great respect and appreciation.

Administrative/Biographical History

Leander "Pete" Newton Trammell (1927-2012) was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to Leander Newton Trammell, Sr. (1900-1991) and Rose Barry Trammell (1899-1993). In 1937, Trammell's family moved to Dalton, Georgia, and Trammell graduated from Dalton High School in 1944. He served in the United States Merchant Marine from 1944 to 1946. After his service, he attended Davidson College in North Carolina where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1950. After teaching at an elementary school in Dalton for three years, Trammell changed careers and worked for forty-four years at Surface Coatings, Inc., a manufacturer of asphalt maintenance products. Just after starting his new job in 1953, Trammell met his partner of forty-six years, Bill Camp (1933-2000), at St. Luke's Episcopal Church of Atlanta.
