Magnolia Garden Club records

 Collection
Collection number: ahc.MSS1135

Scope and Content

The Magnolia Garden Club records include clippings, minutes, newsletters, and scrapbooks, which document the club's social and civic history and activities. The oldest scrapbook, 1922-1949, primarily contains material in reference to Mrs. John (Adelle B.) Harper's speaking engagements and activities with both the Perennial Garden Club (1922-1934) and the Magnolia Garden Club (1935-1949). Three scrapbooks from 1969 highlight the club's community project for the Sheltering Arms Day Care. Several scrapbooks detail the club's Tullie Smith House Garden restoration project.

Administrative/Biographical History

The Magnolia Garden Club of Atlanta, Georgia, was formed in 1935 by several members from the Perennial Garden Club, including Mrs. John L. (Adelle Bartlett) Harper, popular horticultural speaker and the first woman to own and operate a florist shop in Atlanta. The purpose of the club was, "the study and culture of flowers, and the study of landscape gardening and its allied subjects, to promote or support when possible movements to increase the general interest in the cultivation, and improve the standard of excellence of garden flowers." The club has supported many community projects including the Sheltering Arms Day Care Center in Atlanta and the Tullie Smith House Garden restoration at the Atlanta History Center. The club has hosted several flower shows and has also participated in many local and regional flower shows, winning awards in many categories.
