Administrative/Biographical History
The Penny McHenry Hydrangea Festival of Douglasville, Georgia, was organized in 2007 to beautify the community; preserve history; historical places and heirloom plants; and to promote the Douglasville community to the world. The annual festival was created by Jeri Farmer (1940- ) and Susanne Hudson (1940- ), members of the Ama-Kanasta Garden Club. Farmer and Hudson wanted to honor the memory of Penny McHenry (1925-2006), founder of the American Hydrangea Society and well known hydrangea expert. Several garden clubs, including Ama-Kanasta, sponsor a flower show in conjunction with the festival. Other events include garden tours and a garden and artists' market.
