Scope and Content

This collection contains a wide variety of technical manuals, operation logs, and repair guides. These were designed to assist engineers in diagnosing and correcting problems on the Southern Railway locomotives of the 1940s and 1950s. Other articles include newspaper clippings and magazines on the history of Southern Railway, personnel rosters, train schedules, and some of Stein's personal papers.

Administrative/Biographical History

John Howard Stine was a locomotive engineer in the Charlotte Division of the Southern Railway Company from 1941-1971. He was involved in two train accidents over the course of his thrity-year career. The latter was a 1963 crash in which an automobile driver was killed. Stine lived in Decatur, Georgia during his career. Additional biographical information about John Howard Stine has not been determined.
