Administrative/Biographical History

Construction of the Atlanta Stadium, later called the Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, began on April 15, 1964. It was one of the first "cookie-cutter" stadiums built, designed to be multipurpose so it could accommodate both football and baseball. Although the stadium was completed by the 1965 baseball season, the Braves franchise did not move from Milwaukee to Atlanta until the 1966 season. Instead, during this first year Atlanta's International League team, the Atlanta Crackers, played in the stadium. The stadium also hosted the NFL's expansion team, the Atlanta Falcons. On April 8th, 1974, Braves player Hank Aaron hit his record-breaking 715th home run in the Atlanta Stadium. Despite its renovation in 1977, both professional teams decided to find new locations. After construction of the Georgia Dome in 1991 and Turner Field (later called Georgia State Stadium) in 1996, Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium was no longer used and imploded by the city in 1997.
