Administrative/Biographical History
Walter Thomas Downing (1865-1918) was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to John Downing (1832-1878) and Ann Beaux (1835-1901). Downing and his mother moved to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1876. He formed the architectural firm W. T. Downing, Architect in 1890. The firm initially designed churches and institutional buildings, such as the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus as well as buildings on the campuses of Oglethorpe University and the Georgia School of Technology. In 1897, he shifted to designing private residences for Atlantans, including William Wimbish and Frank Ellis. Downing died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, after being struck by a car.
