Administrative/Biographical History

Dr. Charles "Chas" Augustus Sheldon Jr. (1884-1952) was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to Charles Augustus Sheldon Sr. (1857-1934) and Lena Wilson Sheldon (1864-1951). He graduated from the Klindworth-Scharwenka Conservatory, after which he earned a doctorate in music at Oglethorpe University. He performed as a professional organist and composer at the First Presbyterian Church and the Temple on Peachtree Street, both in Atlanta. Sheldon later became the Atlanta Municipal Organist and dean of the Georgia Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. In 1909 he married Ruby Anna Brooks Sheldon (1889-1966) and they had four children: Charles Augustus Sheldon III (1912-1981), Elizabeth Sheldon Fowlkes (1913-2014), Brooks Sheldon (1919-1944), and Robert Wilson Sheldon (1921-2013).
