Administrative/Biographical History

Simonne 'Annette' Cowart Burdges (1946- ) was born in Virginia to Vernon Elton Cowart (1920-2012) and Norma Selena Roussell (1925- ). After she attended Georgia State University in the mid-1960s she married Kenneth Paul Burdges (1942- ), a Georgia School of Technology graduate. She joined the Atlanta Chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) and worked as the secretary and membership coordinator after her college graduation. Formed in 1966 at the Third National Conference of Commissions on the Status of Women, the organization fought against sex discrimination and tried to help pass the Equal Rights Amendment to the United States Constitution. It has since grown into the largest feminist grassroots organization in the United States, and champions equal rights, fair working conditions for women, and the right to choose an abortion.
