Scope and Content

This collection contains documentation of Mary Virginia Davis's education. The bulk of the materials are grammar, arithmetic, and spelling workbooks from E. Rivers School in Atlanta, Georgia. Other school papers include graduation achievement documents, and an E. Rivers School 1946-1947 yearbook titled The Rivers Overflow. There is also a World War II ration book and a wedding dress invoice for Mary Virginia Brown, Bryan's great-grandmother.

Administrative/Biographical History

Mary Virginia Bryan (1934- ) was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to Robert F. Bryan (1904-2006) and Frances Connally Spalding Bryan (1909-1996). Mary Virginia was the great-granddaughter of Mary Virginia Brown Connally (1850-1927), the daughter of Georgia Governor Joseph Emerson Brown (1821-1894). Bryan attended E. Rivers Kindergarten and Elementary Schools from 1939-1947, North Fulton High School from 1947 to 1950, and graduated from Northside High School in 1952. Bryan continued her education at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia. She married Jarrett LaFayette Davis III (1929- ) in 1955 and they had three children, Frances Spalding Davis Roberts (1956- ), Jarrett L. Davis IV (1957- ), and Robert Bryan Davis.
