Scope and Content

This collection contains genealogy records, letters, programs, and newspaper clippings about the Bridges family, primarily Samuel Russell, Jr. Included are the military papers of Samuel Russell Bridges from World War II. Of particular note is Mrs. Bridges' guest book which was signed by President Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924).

Administrative/Biographical History

Samuel Russell Bridges, Jr. (1911-1997) was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to Samuel Russell Bridges, Sr. (1875-1960) and May Eugenia Pagett (1883-1953). In 1933, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in business administration from Emory University. In 1937, he married Julia Dunning Colquitt (1917-1994), who was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to Walter Terry Colquitt (1874-1937) and Julia E. Dunning. They had five children: Dianne, Terry, Bob, Tom, and David. Bridges served as a second lieutenant in the military during World War II. After the war, he worked as a salesman for the Piedmont Life Insurance Company and served as the president for the Atlanta Life Underwriters Association.
