Administrative/Biographical History
The Campbell family of Georgia has traced its family history back to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This family history involves many prominent Georgia citizens, including the Ormes and Bulows. The Campbell family traces its lineage through Reverend Joachim Bulow, who is documented to have resided in Newberry, South Carolina by 1775. The Orme family traces its lineage through Ninian Beall, born in 1624 or 1625, who arrived in Maryland before 1658. The Orme lineage can also be traced through Richard McAllister and Matthew Dill, both settlers in the 1700s. The two families individually prospered, becoming involved in both politics and the military. The families had members who served in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. The Milledgeville paper, The Southern Recorder, was published by Richard McAllister Orme. The two families were joined by the marriage of John Bulow Campbell to Virginia Orme on December 15, 1856. Their son, John Bulow Campbell, married Laura Graflin Berry, the sister of the founder of Berry College in Rome, Georgia. John Bulow Campbell became a prominent Atlanta businessman, and his daughter, Virginia Orme Campbell, married Richard Courts.
