Atlanta Committee on Foreign Relations records

 Collection
Collection number: ahc.MSS955

Scope and Content

The correspondence primarily includes memoranda from Rolland Bushner, Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), to the committee secretaries. On occasion, these memoranda were sent only to the Atlanta secretary, but more often the epistles were sent to committee secretaries in more than one city. The memoranda inform local committees on programs at the Council's office in New York, contain updates on administrative matters, and discuss programming for local committees. The correspondence of the committee secretary documents the various secretaries who served in Atlanta, including John C. Staton, Henry Taylor, Dr. Crawford F. Barnett, Henry Howell, and E. Michael Masinter. This correspondence includes responses to Bushner as well as letters concerning the administration of the committee, ranging from meeting arrangements to dues collection. A small number of letters sent by the CFR to the general membership are also included. Membership materials document the attempts of the Atlanta Committee to increase its membership and encourage current members to be more active. The second series contains summary information on meetings held in Atlanta and biographical information on the speakers and guests who lectured and led the discussion for the Atlanta Committee. Also included is information on prospective speakers proposed by the CFR. The second series captures the essence of the Cold War years for the United States in its representation of prominent leaders worldwide.

Administrative/Biographical History

The Council on Foreign Relations, Inc., helped organize Committees on Foreign Relations in major cities across the nation. These committees sought to educate their members on important international relations problems and issues. The committees invited prominent world leaders and speakers to American cities to guide discussion or lecture on crucial world matters. Committees worked together to arrange and develop their various programs and the annual Conferences on Foreign Relations. The Atlanta Committee on Foreign Relations was founded in February 1950. Monthly meetings, held between September and May, took place over dinner, followed by discussion with statesmen or other guest speakers of special competence in foreign affairs. Informal and private, the meetings facilitated an open expression of views. Beyond their dues, members only needed to be genuinely interested in acquiring a broader understanding of the complexities of international affairs and attend meetings when possible. The Atlanta Committee struggled with low meeting attendance and membership through the years and sometimes held joint meetings with the Southern Center for International Studies. Atlanta Committee secretaries included John C. Staton, Henry Taylor, Dr. Crawford F. Barnett, Henry Howell, and E. Michael Masinter.
