Administrative/Biographical History
The Woman's Relief Corps was organized in 1889 as an auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic, O.M. Mitchell Post, Number 21, which had itself been founded in 1884. The Auxiliary was founded with the object of helping Union veterans of the Civil War and their families stranded in the South, to decorate their graves in the National Cemetery at Marietta, Georgia, and other cemeteries in the Atlanta, Georgia, area, on every National Decoration Day, and to help the Post in various other ways. The Woman's Relief Corps also helped the Red Cross in relief work. The Woman's Relief Corps joined the Georgia Federation of Women's Clubs in 1905. The Woman's Relief Corps was still in existence in 1945 although the O.M. Mitchell Post No. 21 and held its last meeting in March 1920. Additional historical information has not been determined.
