Scope and Content

This collection contains research materials from James G. Bogle's study of George Hewett Daniel (1817-1964), a Confederate soldier. Materials include correspondence from literary agents as well newspaper clippings of Atlanta funerals. Also included is correspondence from Daniel to his daughters and information on his family's genealogy. Of particular note are manuscript drafts of parts II and III of Bogle's book titled George Hewitt Daniel (1817-1864).

Administrative/Biographical History

James Golden Bogle (1915-2010) was born in Colesburg, Tennessee, to Garland McCroskey Bogle (1879-1957) and Cora Lucille Hearn Bogle (1887-1948). Bogle attended Murray State University and Georgia State University. He served in the military for 31 years, including in the Northern Solomons Campaign of World War II and in the Korean War. He gained the position of a colonel and earned a Bronze Star Medal and the Legion of Merit for his service. In 1942, he married Mary Alice Clark (1922-1999) and they had two children; James G. Bogle, Jr. and Alice Clark Bogle Lyons. Bogle and his family moved to Atlanta in 1958 and he became a member of the Atlanta Historical Society and the Civil War Roundtable of Atlanta. He was a historian and author of Railroads and the Civil War.
