This collection consists of a tintype portrait of Dr. Benjamin F. Bomar. The age of the sitter and unsophisticated manufacture of the case box indicate a post-Civil War date.

Administrative/Biographical History

Dr. Benjamin F. Bomar (1816-1868) was a physician and businessman who moved to Atlanta in 1847 and was elected Atlanta's second mayor in 1849. He later served as clerk of the Fulton County Superior Court. A native of South Carolina, Bomar practiced medicine in Dahlonega, Georgia, until he moved to Atlanta where he opened a general merchandise store. Bomar married Sarah Elizabeth Lumpkin Haynes in 1840 and the couple had two children, Thomas Haynes and Amaryllis Bomar. The family lived along the Marietta Road, approximately one mile from the city line.
