Scope and Content

This collection contains one scrapbook of 127 images. These snapshots are mainly of the immediate family of George C. Spence, Sr. and range in date from approximately 1870 to 1945. Subjects include George C. Spence, Sr.; his mother, Cornelia; his sisters, Eudora, Mary, and Eleanor; and his brother, Nat Spence. There are several childhood photographs of George C. Spence, Jr. and his sister Maryanne, as well as photographs of his stepmother, Elizabeth Norman Spence. The images depict the family at their home in outdoor settings and visiting family members. Most photographs include a description supplied by the donor. Included in the collection is an unidentified hand-colored tintype, two silhouettes, and twenty-five black and white negatives of family members, friends, and pets.

Administrative/Biographical History

Nathaniel Cleland Spence (1847-1913) was born in Scotland and immigrated to Atlanta, Georgia, where he met and married Cornelia Thornton Spence (1855-1937) of Atlanta. Nathaniel was an Atlanta carriage maker. He and Cornelia had six children: Mary E. (b. 1872); George C. (1878-1947); James E. (Jim) (b. 1880); Anna T. (b. 1887); Eudora (Dodie) (b. 1892); and Nathaniel C. Jr. (Nat) (b. 1894).

Anna T. Spence married William M. Bellamy and they lived in Wilmington, North Carolina. Eudora Spence married B.D. Gray, Jr. Nat Spence married Grace Marie Cherry (Marie) (b. 1899) and she had two children from a previous marriage; John Cherry (b. 1918) and Marie Cherry (b. 1922). Nat was an attorney and practiced law with his brother George, Sr.

George Spence, Sr. (1878-1947) graduated from University of Georgia Law School and practiced law in Atlanta his entire career. He was an attorney with Evans, Spence, & Moore of Atlanta. He married Annie Rogers (1878-1918) in 1903 and they lived at 562 West Wesley Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia. They had three children: Ellen (b. 1904) who died in infancy; George, Jr. (1912-1994); and Maryanne, (b.1918). Annie Rogers Spence, died during childbirth in 1918. George Spence, Sr. married Elizabeth Norman Spence (1883-1960) in 1930.

George C. Spence, Jr. married Dorothy P. Spence and worked as a sales manager at several Atlanta businesses including Coca-Cola, the U.S. Savings Bond division, and Gray Realty in Atlanta, Georgia.
