Scope and Content

The collection contains photographs of the Atlanta Council of International Visitors (ACIV) from 1969-1979. The photographs consist of black and white and color images of global leaders, students, and professionals who represented countries worldwide. Of special interest are photographs of students visiting Atlanta as a part of the 1975 ACIV Homestay program. Also of note are photographs of Latin American journalists visiting with Governor Jimmy Carter in 1972.

Administrative/Biographical History

The National Council of International Visitors established the Atlanta Council of International Visitors (ACIV) in 1962. The National Council of International Visitors founded ACIV to provide cultural orientations, professional programs, and home hospitality for international leaders and professionals who traveled to Georgia. The Council was part of of the professional exchange initiative of the United States Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). Visitors were selected by American Foreign Officers overseas, and included representatives from government, politics, the media. education, the arts, public health, business and trade, and other fields. In 1973, ACIV merged with the Atlanta International Student Bureau. In 1986, ACIV was renamed the Georgia Council for International Visitors, which maintains an office in Atlanta.
