Administrative/Biographical History

The Atlanta Art Workers Coalition (AAWC) was a coalition of sixty artists who formed in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1976. The goal of the organization was “to promote, protect, and aid the visual artists of Atlanta through programs focused on the need of individual artists and art groups.” AAWC provided galleries and art publications for visual artists of Atlanta to encourage the growth of art criticism in the region. The coalition maintained the following programs and publications: an Information Resources Center; the Coalition Gallery; Atlanta Art Workers Coalition Newspaper (later Atlanta Art Papers); and the Metro Atlanta Directory of Visual Artists. In 1981, the Atlanta Art Papers became Art Papers and begin covering contemporary art and culture in the southeast region of the United States.
