Administrative/Biographical History

The Iris Garden Club of Atlanta, Georgia, was formed in 1928 and became a member of The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. in 1929. The purpose of the club was "to stimulate among amateurs the knowledge and love of gardening, the study and culture of flowers, landscape gardening, protection of native trees, plants, and birds, and the encouragement of civic planting." One of the club's earliest civic projects was the creation of the Iris Garden and Woodland Glen in Winn Park of the Ansley Park neighborhood, which the club continues to maintain. In 1958, the club supported the replanting of the garden at the Orchard Terrace around the historic Redman Thornton House on the grounds of the Atlanta Art Institute. The club has also hosted and participated in many local and regional flower shows, winning numerous awards.
