Scope and Content
This collection is comprised of images of the historic Midtown area in Atlanta, Georgia. The photographs were taken for draft nomination on the National Register of Historic Places for Midtown. Included are photos of churches, Henry Grady High School, stores and businesses, street scapes, apartments, and homes in the Midtown area. Types of homes photographed vary among bungalows, duplexes, row houses, carriage houses, alley dwellings, and cottages. Of special interest are photographs of the residences of Julian La Rosa Harris, Ralph McGill (editor of the Atlanta Constitution), and historian and artist Wilbur Kurtz. Architects and designers of photographed structures include Gottfried Norrman, W.T. Downing, Lewis Crook, Leila Ross Wilburn, and Haralson Bleckley.

Administrative/Biographical History
Kenneth H. Thomas, Jr. (1946-) is a native of Columbus, Georgia, who graduated from Columbus High School and recieved a bachelor of arts degree in History from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Thomas served nearly four years in the United States Air Force, then in 1973 worked for the Historic Preservation Section/Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources in Atlanta. While with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, he researched and documented historic sites like the Midtown Historic District. From 1978 until 2006, Thomas was a historian for the National Register of Historic Places. He served and is still serving on numerous boards, such as the Georgia Historical Society, the Friends of Georgia Archives and History, the Georgia Postcard Club, and the Georgia Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists. Thomas is also a Fellow of the Society of Georgia Archivists and a recipient of awards such as the Governor's Award for the Arts and Humanities. Thomas writes a weekly genealogy column in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and has published two books, Columbus, Georgia in Vintage Postcards and Fort Benning, Images of American Series.
