Administrative/Biographical History

Jewish War Veterans of the United States was originally formed as the Hebrew Union Veterans by 63 Jewish Civil War veterans on March 15, 1896 in New York City. The organization's mission is to "maintain true allegiance to the United States of America; to foster and perpetuate true Americanism; to combat whatever tends to impair the efficiency and permanency of our free institutions; to uphold the fair name of the Jew and fight his or her battles wherever unjustly assailed; and to encourage the doctrine of universal liberty, equal rights, and full justice to all men and women." The organization is governed by elected officials such as president, treasurer, and secretary. There are over 400 posts located across the country and members participate in a wide variety of philanthropic activities to assist veterans and nonveterans. These activities include holding holiday parties to provide gifts for veterans at VA hospitals; donating food and clothing; and fighting veteran homelessness.
