This collection contains images of the christening of the SS John B. Gordon. Included are photographs of individuals involved in the ceremony, including: Reverend G. Borthern Jones; McWhorter Milner; Annabell Allen; Miss Carl Wohlford; Frank Poole; Mrs. Charles I. Allan (spelled Allen in the captions on the photos); Mrs. Edwin L. Jones; and Ellen Beasley.

Administrative/Biographical History
Under a Martime Commission Contract, J.A. Jones Construction Company laid the keel for the SS John B. Gordon on September 6, 1943, in Brunswick, Georgia. The ship was allocated to T. J. Stevenson and Company, Inc. and was sponsored by Mrs. Charles I. Allan. It was named for John B. Gordon, a Confederate States Army general, United States Senator from Georgia, and 53rd Governor of Georgia. It was launched and christened on November 16, 1943, and served as a Liberty ship for the United States Navy during World War II. On September 15, 1959, the ship was sold to Bethlehem Steel for scrapping.
