Administrative/Biographical History

Girls High School was founded in 1872 as part of the Atlanta Public School System. At the time, it was the only public school in Atlanta for girls. Curriculum included physical education, domestic skills such as cooking, cleaning and sewing and business. The original school site was the DeSaul Building at the corner of Whitehall Street and Hunter Street and had an enrollment of 171 students. In 1925, with over 750 students, the school moved to Rosalia Street and in 1947 the school became coeducational and renamed Roosevelt High School. The school combined with Hoke Smith Technical School in 1985 when it officially closed.
