Hale family papers
Scope and Contents
This collection contains the personal papers and family records of Sheffield Hale. Personal documents include correspondence, writings, publications, newspapers, articles, and records reflecting his non-profit work and legal career. Of particular note are articles and blog posts regarding his work related to the movement to remove Confederate monuments. Family papers include research on family members and associated families of Sheffield Hale. There are copies of original documents, correspondence, obituaries, and publications regarding businesses, estates, and relatives. There are also newspaper clippings and applications to geneological societies with copies of supporting documents. Of particular interest are World War II ration books and copywriter notes and proofs from Anne Sheffield Hale's time as a copywriter for Rich's Department Store.

Administrative and Biographical History
Quenelle Harrold (1903-1999) was born to Thomas Harrold (1867-1942) and Anne Frances Long (1871-1963). Thomas Harrold operate Harrold Brother's firm in Americus, Georgia, which operated as a mercantile business in several industries. In 1932, Quenelle married Frank Sheffield (1899-1994). She graduated from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, and earned her Master of Arts in European history from Columbia University. She also studied at the Tobias Matthay Pianoforte School in London and later became a banker and a private pilot. After moving to Atlanta, she she worked as a copywriter in advertising for Rich’s Department Store. Later, she attended Emory University graduate school, received her teaching certificate, and taught social studies at Murphy High School.
William “Bradley” Hale (1933-2011) was born to Kathleen Bradley (1899-1984) and Ernest Everett Hale (1898-1984) in Mobile, Alabama. He practiced law for 31 years, mostly as an attorney and managing partner at the law firm of King & Spalding. In addition, he served as board chairman of the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, and a founding chairman of the advisory board of the Georgia Historical Society. He was also a trustee of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the board chairman of the Atlanta Historical Society. In 1959, he married Anne Elizabeth Sheffield, who was born to Quenelle Harrold (1903-1999) and Frank Sheffield (1899-1994) in Americus, Georgia. Anne Sheffield Hale attended Sweet Briar College, a liberal arts college for women in Sweet Briar, Virginia, and graduated cum laude in 1954 with a Bachelor of Arts in history. In addition, she supported various civic and intellectual endeavors, such as the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving, Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts, National Cathedral Association, National Society of The Colonial Dames. She and Bradley Hale were both members of All Saints’ Episcopal Church.
Frank "Sheffield" Hale (1960- ) was born to Anne Elizabeth Sheffield (1933-2010) and William “Bradley” Hale (1933-2011). Sheffield Hale received his Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Georgia summa cum laude in 1982 and received his Juris Doctor in 1985 from the University of Virginia School of Law. In 1988 he married Elizabeth Warfield Medlin (1959- ). In addition, Hale served as Chief Counsel of the American Cancer Society, Inc. and was a partner at the firm Kilpatrick and Stockton LLP (later Kilpatrick Townsend), where he practiced corporate law. Hale has been a trustee of the National Trust for Historic Preservation; Fox Theatre, Inc.; Buckhead Coalition; Midtown Alliance; and Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau. He later served as board chair of the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation; the Atlanta History Center; St. Jude’s Recovery Center, Inc.; and the State of Georgia’s Judicial Nominating Commission. Hale began serving as President and CEO of the Atlanta History Center in 2012 and is a member of the American Law Institute.
