Scope and Content

This collection contains 2 folders with several papers of Arthur L. Harris Jr. and his wife, Carol. The first folder of the collection contains documents of Carol Harris and includes; two Christmas cards, a lyric sheet for “camp Song” by George R. Green, a 1938-1939 Association for Youth Aliyah London calendar, two photos of a Peachtree Garden Club parade float, three photos of a floral contest, seven miscellaneous and unlabeled photos of people and landscapes, four blank postcards from the home of Juliette Low in Savannah, Georgia, three letters from the Girl Scout national headquarters regarding the appointments of regional committee and the regional conference, a loan deed for thirty-five dollars to be repaid to Ida L. Wason, an advertisement for war bonds, eight letters written in French from Mademoiselle R. Rene- Hirsch in Paris, one receipt from Maggs Bros book store in London for the H. G. Wells book, War and the Future, one letter from Philobiblon magazine regarding book collectors, and one letter regarding a recent Girl Scout conference. The second folder of the collection contains documents of Arthur L. Harris and include; one bill from Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company, forty-six checks written by Arthur Harris, one telegram regarding his lease at the Atlanta Biltmore Hotel, one sheet with information for Army identification tags, one request to the United States War Production Board for authorization of official travel, a recommendation for commission in the U.S Army for Kenneth N. Watson, one booklet from the U.S government regarding changes in duties and assignments of military personnel, five bank statements, one memorandum from the War Department noting his change in salary due to his recent divorce with Carol, a personal account expense list from the Atlanta Paper Company, two comparison of sales charts for the Atlanta Paper Company, one letter from the Biltmore Hotel regarding the termination of his lease, two letters from the law offices of Weil Stakley and Cater regarding the Leonel Weil family trust, one letter from Leo C. Wurtz of the Memphis Paper Company regarding his recent visit to Atlanta, a letter to the IRS stating Harris’ educational and professional background and asking for an extension on his income tax, an IRS letter granting Harris an extension on his income tax form, and three letters from Carol written while she was living in Montgomery, Alabama and while Arthur L. Harris attended Harvard Law School. These letters discuss Carol’s everyday activities, her anticipation of being engaged, and the couple’s engagement announcements.

Administrative/Biographical History

Arthur L. Harris Jr. (1910-1996) was born in Georgia in 1910. His father was Arthur P. Harris and his mother unknown. Harris graduated from Yale University with a degree in French in 1931 then attended Harvard Law School until 1934. After finishing law school, he moved back to Atlanta and worked for the Hirsch, Smith, and Kilpatrick law firm until 1936. He then worked as the executive vice president of his father’s business, the Atlanta Paper Company, until 1942. Harris was active in the Atlanta community and was a member of the Atlanta Lawyers Club, the Georgia Bar Association, the Atlanta Rotary club, the Community Fund, and the Red Cross. He was also director of the Atlanta Freight Bureau, Chairman of the Atlanta United Service Organization, and was president of the Atlanta Travelers Aid Society. During World War II, Harris worked in the Army as Captain at the CMP Control Branch in the Resources and Production Division. He was married to Carol W. but divorced her in January of 1943. The couple had no children.
