Scope and Contents
This collection contains materials pertaining to Cathy Woolard's career on the Atlanta City Council, including campaign flyers, voter surveys, press clippings about her work, legal paperwork, and administrative binders. The bulk of documents are planning materials about the construction of the Atlanta BeltLine, such as financial and environmental studies, presentations, and magazines and publications. Also included are documents related to Woolard's service on the Atlanta March Committee for the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay rights in 1987.

Biographical / Historical
Catheren "Cathy" Woolard (1957-) was born to Henry Woolard, Jr. (1930-2019) and Barbara Harwell Woolard (1931-). She graduated from the University of Georgia in 1979 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. She then volunteered with the Peace Corps and worked as a National Field Director for the Human Rights Campaign Fund. In 1997, Woolard became the first openly gay member elected to the Atlanta City Council, where she served from 1997 until 2002. She was elected President of the Atlanta City Council from 2002 to 2004, the first woman to serve in the role. She then worked in a variety of positions in advocacy and non-profit organizations such as Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere (CARE), Planned Parenthood, Georgia Equality, and AID Atlanta. In 2015, she announced her campaign for mayor of Atlanta in the 2017 election, which was won by Keisha Lance Bottoms.
