Biographical / Historical

Sally Fanny Gleaton (1885-1968) was born in Conyers, Georgia, the youngest of four children to Judge George Washington Gleaton (1845-1910) and Frances "Fanny" Stewart Gleaton (1847-1931). In 1906 she graduated from Randolph Macon College in Ashland, Virginia. She returned to Conyers to manage the family's farm that she inherited from her father. In 1915 she marched in the Atlanta Suffrage Parade, after which she became involved in the National Women's Suffrage Association, eventually becoming a field secretary. During this time she traveled across the United States and volunteered for the American Red Cross. In 1919 she again returned to Conyers and helped to organize White Women of Atlanta after the ratification of the 19th Amendment. She continued to advocate that women be granted all duties of citizenship, specifically jury duty. She piloted her own plane and flew to rallies and lobbied for a reduction in the taxation of Southern food products created with cottonseed oil, such as margarine. Later she worked as a census enumerator while continuing to manage her family farm.
